Well...it's just easier to put an alignment than describe everything about a character. Don't get me wrong though, backrounds are great, and give a lot of insight into characters' lives, but when you're on a roll and just want to check which side a character is on, it's easier just to look at alignment.
Meh...just put one in your profiles.
Lawful Good
A lawful good character is one who has such dedication that they focus to fight evil relentlessly. They tell the truth, keep their word, and do not tolerate injustice, hating to see bad deeds go unpunished. A Paladin who protacts the innocent and fights evil without mercy is lawful good. Lawful good is honour and compassion.
Neutral Good
A neutral good person does the best they can do within their limits, and is devoted to helping others. They work with kings and magistrates, but doesn't feel beholden to them. Neutral good is doing what they can without bias for or against order.
Chaotic good
Chaotic good characters do what their concience tells them, despite what people expect. They believe in good, but have no use for laws. They follow their moral compass, which while good, may not always agree with society. Robin Hood is a good example of chaotic good. Chaotic good is a good heart and a free spirit.
Lawful Neutral
A lawful neutral character follows tradition, or their own personal code, without being swayed by either evil, nor those in need. Lawful neutral is being reliable and honourable without being a zealot.
True Neutral
A true neutral character is somewhat of a fence-sitter. They don't feel particularly drawn to good or evil, nor law or chaos. They would prefer good neighbours and rulers, but don't feel inclined to fight relentlessly against evil. A wizard who devotes theirself to their study and is bored by moral chatterings is true neutral. True neutral is the most balanced of alignments, and represents thinking without prejudice or compulsion.
Chaotic Neutral
Chaotic neutral characters present themselves as individuals who challange tradition. They are do not promote anarchy, as that would require them to be motivated by the desire to liberate others, or to cause suffering. Chaotic neutral represents being free of society and zeal, while not being completely random in acts.
Lawful Evil
A lawful evil character is the kind that will methodically plan their attempts to take what they want, so long as it is within their code of conduct. They care about loyalty and tradition, but not freedom, dignity or life. Lawful evil is methodical, intentional evil.
Neutral Evil
Neutral evil characters do whatever they can get away with, not mourning those they hurt. They have no intentions of upholding codes or laws, although they are not as restless and random and joyful in their evil as those who are chaotic.
Chatotic Evil
A chaotic evil character will do whatever their emotions drive them to do. They are hot-tempered, violent and unpredictable. They normally don't think, and chaotic evil groups tend not to work well as members are always scheming to usurp power. Chaotic evil is utter destruction, not only of life and beauty, but also the foundations life and beuaty are built on.
